The Great Lakes Art Society (GLAS) is anticipating an enthusiastic response to the inaugural illustration component in the popular Tell Me A Story Competition.

Tell Me A Story writing competition was launched in 2018 by the Great Lakes Advocate, attracting more than 50 entries.
Earlier this year GLAS came on-board to give artistically inclined students the opportunity to participate in growing competition.
“We are really looking forward to seeing the extent of talent amongst local students and the variety of works,” GLAS president, Bettina Digby said.
“Illustrations in stories for children are such an important part of the story telling, they trigger the reader’s imagination and assist the words in taking the reader on the story’s journey.”
In illustrating a story, the drawing or painting style is critical, Ms Digby said.

“It must be appropriate to the age group and to the subject and mood of the story.

“I’d encourage those students who wish to submit an entry to visit their local library and have a long look at the variety of illustration styles used.

“They will see how artists have used many, many artistic styles to help convey the story.”
The competition, open to primary to middle school aged children in Years 5-9, invites students to submit an illustration for one of the winning stories from the Tell Me A Story writing section.

Details of the competition are available at the Lake Street Gallery, 34 Lake Street, Forster, while registration and additional details also are available on the Tell Me A Story website here.
Winning illustrators will be announced in the GLA in mid-July, while both winning and commended illustrators will have their name, school and illustration displayed at the Lake Street Gallery for two weeks.
To register send an email to and include the student’s name, school, year at school, phone contact and the subject line: Illustration Competition.
Competition closes on Thursday, July 4.
